How to transform an email into a WordPress post safely.

One of the most famous and appreciated plugin used to better configure an email as a gateway for creating an automatic post is POSTIE.

It’s really intuitive and easy to set up.
What you need is just to install POSTIE plugin and set up the incoming email.

Take into account that everyone who will send an email to the incoming email could create a post so it’s recommended to choose an email account that must be hard to suppose (e.g. b357fr1end5@servermx.com) and set up the default status to draft (to be able to verify the post before the publishing).

Setup the email Postie

It’s pretty easy. Next an example based on  servermx.com account configuration (here you’ll find other configurations parametrizations) :

You can set timing and other several parms.
It’s always better to check if the parameters specified are right.
You can use the TELNET command from the command prompt.
Open the command prompt and type: TELNET.
If TELNET is not installed type :
dism /online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:TelnetClient
and press enter

Now, to test for example the connection setup above mentioned, type:
telnet pop.servermx.com 110
press enter and you should get the response from the email servers (type: quit to exit)

How “catch-all” option work?

How “catch-all” option work?

The catch-all option is a pretty useful function, but quite underrated

In few easy word, it allows addressing emails to a specific email account in case of the destination email is wrong.

Obviously, it works on a single domain.

You have only to set the account you want to be the catch-all account (e.g.: masteraccount@mydomain.com)
for being the catch-all account.

All the emails sent to <account>@mydomain.com in case of the <account> is missing will be delivered to masteraccount@mydomain.com.

email vs vps

servermx

One problem is that you are Hosting your email and website on the same server.
Another one is that, usually, the “email” features is a core function of your business but it doesn’t for a hosting provider (The core business it’s the hosting) and even the support provides is secondary, in terms of quality, if compared to the one provided for the hosting.
One more issue might be that the Website hosting is not reliable and if the Hosting goes down for 1 day also your email goes down for 1 day.

Using website hosting for your email could chain you for more than the time you want.

Maybe at some point, you could decide to move your website somewhere else. Migrating a website is simple but migrating email can be a nightmare.

Obviously, If you worked with a reliable VPS or Dedicated Server it’s could seem ok, but you should take into account the infrastructure management costs and how to scale any further needs.
